OHL Playoff Format: Qualification, Seeding & Rounds

Understand who qualifies, how teams are seeded and why opponents change between rounds. Follow the four-round road to the J. Ross Robertson Cup.

The road to the J. Ross Robertson Cup

Sixteen teams qualify for the OHL playoffs: eight from the Eastern Conference and eight from the Western Conference. They play four rounds of best-of-seven hockey. The first team to four wins in each series advances.

How many teams make the OHL playoffs?

The top eight teams in each conference qualify. The Eastern Conference contains the East and Central divisions; the Western Conference contains the Midwest and West divisions. Qualification is by conference, so there is no separate four-place quota for each division.

How are playoff seeds decided?

The two division winners receive the top two seeds in their conference. The remaining qualifying teams fill seeds 3 through 8 according to the league’s standings and applicable tie-breakers. A seed describes a team’s place in the playoff draw, not its rank across the entire league.

If teams finish level on points, consult the official OHL tie-breaker policy. It distinguishes a tie for the last playoff berth from ties used to order qualifying teams. A points tie alone is not enough to decide a seed.

First-round matchups: 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5

The same opening-round pairings apply separately in each conference:

1 vs 8
2 vs 7
3 vs 6
4 vs 5

What does best of seven mean?

A team must win four games to take a series. The shortest series lasts four games and the longest lasts seven. A team leading 3–0 has not advanced yet; its opponent can still win four straight. Games beyond the deciding fourth win are not played.

The four rounds of the OHL playoffs

  1. 16 teamsConference quarter-finals
  2. 8 teamsConference semi-finals
  3. 4 teamsConference finals
  4. 2 teamsOHL Championship Series
  5. 1 championJ. Ross Robertson Cup

These counts cover the whole league. Each conference starts with eight teams and produces one conference champion; those two winners meet for the OHL title.

Does the OHL re-seed after each round?

Yes, within each conference. After the first round, the highest remaining seed faces the lowest, and the other two teams play each other. Division winners retain their top-two seed positions for as long as they remain in the playoffs. After the second round, the two remaining teams meet in the conference final.

For example, if seeds 1, 3, 6 and 8 remain in a conference, the next round pairs 1 with 8 and 3 with 6. This illustrates the rule; it is not a prediction for 2027.

OHL playoff overtime: sudden death, no shootout

A tied playoff game continues until somebody scores. Under Rule 84.5, a regulation tie is followed by a 15-minute intermission and then a 20-minute overtime period. If no one scores, another intermission and overtime period follow. The first overtime goal wins the game.

How does that differ from the regular season?

Playoff games do not end in a shootout. There is no fixed limit on the number of overtime periods. Allow extra time when planning transport after a playoff game, particularly for a close elimination game.

The OHL championship and the Memorial Cup

The Eastern and Western conference champions meet in the best-of-seven OHL Championship Series. Its winner receives the J. Ross Robertson Cup. The Memorial Cup is a separate CHL championship involving the OHL, WHL and QMJHL champions and a host team; it is not a fifth round of the OHL playoffs.
